March 10, 2017 Edition of Columbia Missourian, Page 1A
This page was a challenge because of the images that were available: trash and daffodils. My editors suggested a photo teaser in our evening budget meeting, so I got to work with our photo department to select and crop an appropriate photo for a teaser.

This was also a light news day, so I was proud that I was able to fill out the front page in a visually interesting way.

I didn't learn that I was expecting a vertical photo until late in the evening, and had to come up with this arrangement with little planning. While I would like to see more space on this page, I am happy with how much content I was able to get on the page and with the overall result.

Yes, this is a full-color photo.

I was allowed to choose an AP story around which to create a feature page, and I chose this one based on the strength of its photos and on its topical subject matter: immigration in America.
